One of my favorite places to run, walk, and bike is the Big Creek Greenway. I took a walk one cool morning recently and brought along my camera. I wasn't able to capture any wildlife this time - I have seen squirrels, chipmunks, deer (usually early in the morning) and once a great big black snake. Fortunately, I was on my bike when the snake slithered across the path!
The Greenway is also the place where I had my big smackdown four years ago and realized that, yes, Virginia, you do need to wear a helmet. Two sprained hands and two black eyes, and a big knot on my hard head - ouch. So, without further ado, I present scenes from the Greenway.
They had to paint the yellow lines down the center so that some folks would get the idea to keep to their side of the path.
Going under Old Milton Parkway.
Big Creek. This isn't the best shot because there are prettier spots with mini-rapids.
I call these Morlock holes. If you've ever seen "The Time Machine" with Rod Taylor and Yvette Mimieux, you'll know what I mean.
I saw this sign and immediately had a mental picture of dentures being scattered on the path ahead of me - or maybe those wind-up chattering teeth. Alas, it turned out to be a big bridge and roadway being built over the Greenway!
Goldenrod and other wildflowers along the way. In summer you can find wild blackberries which people actually bring their buckets and pick.
I plan to go back and take more pictures next month when the leaves are at their peak. Who needs to drive up into the mountains to see fall at her finest?
